Braht
My daughter calls her 8 year old brother "brat" and he fumes, saying that it's super unfair and he shouldn't have to live with such indignity and assault on his character. Of course, I agree. I tell my daughter that she shouldn't use hurtful words and knock it the hell off, besides.
"It's not hurtful," she says. "It means 'brother'."
You see, my mama has been giving them Russian lessons. And "braht" in Russian means "brother". Apparently, my daughter thinks that I have suffered a mental impairment because she expects me to believe that when she tells him "you are such a brat!" that she means "You are such a brother!"
Mama couldn't agree with her more. "Don't be snob of accent," she tells me. "Your daughter is learning the Russian. It's beautiful."
Yes, beautiful. Of course I pronounce "beautiful"--"eedeeoteek"

OH. . . And I thought she meant a German sausage. . .
and can you teach me to swear in Russian? They I can get back to commenting the way I USED TO.
Vodka Mom has the same idea as me. Please give us some nasty ones. How about how to say husband in Russian. It must me Ashthole right?
I think this should be a new series - how to speak Russian-esque.
Christy took the words right out of my mouth. I want a whole series on Russian swear words and insults. We could go far with this information!
OOOOO!!! I've always wanted to learn a 2nd language.
Mothers and their supportive ways... :p
Or should I say grandmothers.
Your daughter is a quick thinker. Not surprising I might add!
I don't blame her for trying, I would have done the same. My husband's grandmother is Czech and his family call her "Baba" which apparently translates to "Old Witch". She chose the name though...
Yes, congrats on her learning Russian. Very good choices for her first words.
my son calls his sister an idiot several times a day. what does that mean in our native tongue? oh, yeah, my family is from england. argh,
I'm not sure if it's better or worse the "Mrs Cuckoo Mellor," which is what my kids call each other when they really really want to annoy each other. But it's certainly just as irritating to the recipient.
I don't know why you see the need to discourage your daughter's love of the Russian language.
The Latin word for "old woman" is anus.
Ah, so then how does one say "sister" in Russian. Or, the Russian word for "Brat?" Or, are there no brats in Russia??
