In the News

I was recently interviewed for The Daily News article about how parents use texting to communicate with their kids. My favorite texting with my daughter story is when she texts me from her room telling me that she's thirsty. And I text back from my room to tell her to go get a glass of water. And she texts back that I am closer to the kitchen than she is and please get it for me!! I'm thirsty and can't move!!!!

It reminds me of a time in the early 1990s when I was living in a fourth floor walk-up in NYC. It was the type of place that once you climbed the stairs after work, you never wanted to go back down again. Sort of like the Mt. Kilomanjaro don't dash back down for a sandwich once they're close to the top. Anyway, there was a deli on the ground floor and one afternoon my friend Liz and I phoned in a nutritious order of cigarettes and beer, for delivery. And when I gave the address, the man on the phone said "do you want to pick it up? You're in the same building" and I said "no, we don't have legs" because apparently that was less mortifying than admitting that we were just that lazy. But don't worry, I learned my lesson well. Now I'd order online and spare myself the phone humiliation.

That's really funny. And reminds me of my teenage years when kids my age got their own phone lines (clearly before mobile phones went mainstream). And parents would call kids on their phones to tell them it's time for dinner. To think we were losing the human touch then. At least there was a human voice involved!

My 9-year-old is stalking me for a cell and I know she'll do the exact same thing.

Her cousin of the same age, who has a cell, was over and they kept texting me from right upstairs with "Hi" "What's up?" and "Ur cool"

I really wanted to figure out how to text a slap to them both. ;)

I text my kids all the time. They don't answer when I call if they are around their friends. Effing teenagers.

But now we know where you live ;)

I am not crazy about texting from a phone. I consider it a huge pain in my ass. And it sounds like your daughter was trying to be one to you as well. I hope you told her to get her own water....

They are supposed to wait on us...hello

Online ordering has literally changed my life. If only it extended beyond pizza down here in Tennessee.

So...room service in Chicago won't be a problem for you then? That might be the best ordering story I've ever heard.

I've wondered before if I could call a restaurant and ask that the food be delivered my car. In their parking lot. Because that would eliminate my "take all the kids in to pick up food and then rebuckle or risk someone calling the police while I pay for our dinner" dilemma.

Remember the old days when your mother had to scream out the window?

OMG. You are just like my mother. Not old enough I KNOW.

She has a thick brogue. When people ask her where she is from she says, "Texas".

When the bible thumpers come to the door with little bibles she says, "Ach sure I niver larned tuh read."

At my house we do the same thing. If my mom is downstairs and I am upstairs she texts me to tell me dinner is ready/my laundry is done/some other thing. Sometimes I call her instead of walking to wherever she is when I need to talk to her.

I have never gotten into texting. Honestly, what is wrong with dialing and having a conversation? I don't have big fingers but why do they always hit two keys at a time on those tiny keypads and fgwpoZ clzdksh whdika ald?

Re anymommy's comment, I used to dream up all kinds of crazy that-would-never-catch-on schemes to keep my kids in their carseats, like drive-thru banks and dry cleaners and drugstores.
Then I moved to America.
God Bless America.

I once lived in a sixth floor walk-up. Even my boyfriend would just hit the buzzer and tell me to come down. No one was hoofing it up six flights.

Loved your Daily News quote. I clicked on your blog.

LOL...On Saturday or Sunday mornings while I'm laying bed, I call my husband on his cell phone to request a cup of coffee or a cold soda. If it's coffee, he brings it with a scowl. If it's a cold soda, one of the kids brings it with a smile that just melts my heart. :)
